It is within the headlines all over the place that the world goes by means of a psychological well being disaster. Although, while you take a better look, most headlines are about the US. It's the lack of nutrients in our food. 13:00
I'd wager that part of the income disparity along mental wellbeing is due to the fact that mentally ill people dont tend to be as successful
It's a bit glib to just say Americans aren't known for their concern for the environment, as if they are a load of gas guzzling rednecks. It is a huge country with over 300million people in it, with a complex and diverse range of world views. I think Sabine has been uncharacteristically offhand with that remark.
I think that cognitive dissonance has a great deal to do with it. Cognitive dissonance can be defined as "the ability to hold two or more mutually contradictory points of view at the same time". This is something that people have always been capable of.
Do you also think the lack of third spaces (parks, malls, etc) and an inability to access those spaces contributes to the rise in social media use in young people (particularly in the United States)? Many cities in the United States have infrastructure built around the expectation that most citizens have a personal vehicle, leaving young people with no license or no car essentially stranded in their own homes. Public spaces in the United States are often not people friendly either; anti-homeless measures (which imo, are just anti-people measures) and "no loitering" signs tend to be the norm, again making it difficult for young people to exist in spaces outside of home or school. Coupled with the often unaffordable costs of public transport and riding services, it seems like a no-brainer that young people would be inclined towards social media because it is so easy to access.
Weaponized 'news.'
Prety weak summary.
recent refugee here: There are a lot of refugees in salt lake city becuase the church gives them money if they pretend to believe in god.
Sabine is an out of touch boomer.
The world is burning down and you all drive around in industrial space heaters that produce more heat than your furnace at home. Plastic. America is burning the world first and then trying to help people second. Your country will not be able to handle a billion refugees if our life support systems continue to fail.

as a former Psych minor in college i feel i can wade into this: i think suicides are related to feelings of failure and the only way to ease the intense pain of failure is suicide.
I have to disagree with the analysis presented in this video both in methodology and conclusion for a multitude of reasons.
You actually did state one of them near the start of the video looking at self harm and suicides may not be the best indicator of the pervasiveness of mental health issues in a country..
To start with the defintion of good mental health has to be established before doing any analysis if the pervasiveness of mental health illness in society.
As we all know can be chronically mentally ill and still function in society when suicide for oneself is not an acceptable option.
Having gone to too many funerals for death by suicide unfortunately it is still an option taken up by some.
I could comment more but there is no point until the definition of mental health and mental illness and their measure is established.
P.S. Thank you for the video. The supporting data was useful. As always you do a wonderful job in educating with just the right amount of humor at well placed points.
Don't confuse rank stupidity for a mental illness.
I think its just the psychologists try to bring in money.
It’s very easy to explain the US mental health crisis. The patients are running the asylum. From our government telling people what they see isn’t really happening to our schools telling kids they aren’t male or female. There’s a huge problem here with lack of reality. And unfortunately it’s the young influential minds that the insane people are going after.
Thank you for this clear and concise video.
Beautiful sexy, acc nt need you!!!!!
Still beautiful
If they wait for tv to tell them everything.
Tv misleads them and chaos ensues
Umm … I had no idea Dr Hossenfelder did non-physics videos. Word to the wise, if you're reading this, doctor: Stop. This is embarrassing. I don't know if one of your sponsors asked you do it, or what. But just stop. One of the curses of our age is the tendency of highly online people to assume that with an internet connection and a few long nights they can become an expert in anything. It curses many fields (most notably history, political science, and climate science) but especially epidemiology. People spend their lives learning the nuances (and it's incredibly nuanced) of human sickness on a macro scale. Trust that they know what they're talking about and don't make them spend all their time explaining to people that what they saw on a youtube video by an eminent scientist in a completely different field isn't quite right.. A physicist "examining the data" is just epistemiologically faulty. You can't "examine the data" unless you know intimately where the data came from and how. That's what epidemiologists do (also what physicists do when they're looking at data from the latest collider experiment). Be a little humble please. We could really use it.
The US "mental" health problem, is a drug addiction problem. The sober ones are brainwashed into believing in someone elses psychosis.
Pharma laughing all the ways to the bank.
how are u actually supposed to see a rise in lets say clinical depression, if the system for diagnosing this is basically "full up" ? in germany you wait 1-2 years now to get a first counceling – that means you cannot even FIND depressed people, cause the system for actually "clinically recognizing" the illness is blocked.
its like saying : deaths per capita dont rise, cause our 3 nationwide doctors are still busy counting …
What about the constant fearmongering in the US? When the state and media constantly try to scare the shit out of people, it's no wonder that especially young adults (too old to ignore politics like children, to young to have reached the level of resignation and deliberate ignorance of older adults) become anxious and depressed.
Stick to your field of knowledge Sabine.
When capitalism tells you over and over that the value of your life is based entirely on what's in your bank account, shit like this happens.
Maybe you could have talked about that in your capitalism video, if it hadn't been sponsored by PragerU
The mental health of many leaders in the US and UK is questionable. Sabine was there any correlation in relation to post war PTSD? By the way I am loving your blogs.
More money more mental issues. So be poor
Many people in the United States are denying climate change, while at the same time suffering summer heat. That cognitive dissonance may drive them nuts.
Thabks to Democrat propaganda and globalist agendas. Ppl are going nuts.
✊✊✊ GO!!! Deal with these mental health doctor maniacs! With you all the fucking way!!!! ✊✊✊
I have been forced to endure this problem as someone with autism, and it has put me through unimaginable misery. I don't wanna do what they believe in, and follow their ridiculous regimes, or the New Age ideology of meditation and fucking counselling. I want real help, that is shown to really work; not theories. I fucking hate them all. Long live SCIENCE and I love science!!!! Love from England, United Kingdom! We are not all weak losers that want to be cuddled by Mummy, or people that are naughty that need to be made to sit in the corner. We have POWERS and STRENGTHS and I won't people to proud of me!!! I wanted to be someone that people look up to and someone that does something OUTSTANDING!!!
'it should not be confused with the local burden of disease commonly known as kindergarten' had to pause and rewind to make sure. just discovered you yesterday, love your mind!
