But tonight – in a joint investigation with the Unbiased newspaper, this programme can reveal the surprising therapy of a 28-year-old man who has now been locked up for greater than 10 years.
Nicholas Thornton, who has autism and a studying incapacity, has been abused bodily and verbally. One nurse even tried to suffocate him. Nicholas is at the moment in a psychological well being unit regardless of having no psychological well being prognosis.
And a warning that this report accommodates distressing pictures.

Yes, secure unit – a very misleading name.
It’s a good screw working for NHS, so people take jobs but have no time for people. If they think, you ‘should’ be doing a,b, or c – they get angry with patients.
I was actually regarded as being ‘ crazy ‘ & ‘racist’, because the Russian did something to me abroad. That resulted in me being coming very poorly.
I got away with the help of some Brits. I was taken from air port to hospital with blood results that the dr couldn’t work out.
It was so traumatic, I reported that they had a glock & a rifle in their home and were peddling illegal cigarettes 🚬. I was just ignored.
I was extremely frightened of these people.
Also, after being put on a massive dose of Valium, just was taken off it abruptly. I kept on telling the crisis team. They just ignored me. One of them said, well you should be going to the gym’, you have been out long enough now’.
She was about 18 stone, so that really annoyed me, plus I was trying to manage an extremely frightening sudden withdrawal from Valium.
It ended up that I was sedated in another hospital, whilst, I was weaned back onto Valium & weaned off again over 2 1/2 years. I have never felt right since. Plus I was left with late diagnosis coeliac disease and chronic and illness from all the psychiatric drugs, they prescribed.
Then -10years later, I was told I didn’t need all the psychiatric drugs ?
Left unable to work – blamed for being addicted to the sleeping tablets they prescribed like sweeties – sent out week by week in a tray. So, I did what the doctor said, all whilst living with a diagnosed condition.
That is horrible that he was abused
And people wonder why we dont trust the services set out to protect us.
Nonverbal autists are often nonverbal as a trauma response. My heart goes out to you, Nicholas, if you're reading this. You deserve infinitely better than you've received. I'm sorry people don't listen to you, either. Selective mutism is a symptom of my autism. It's not really selective, I don't choose when it happens, I just can't speak sometimes. Keyboards are easier to talk with than my mouth, too.
Neurodevelopmental disabilities aren't mental illnesses. Autism and ADHD aren't mental illnesses. They're neurodevelopmental disabilities. There's a supermassive difference – we're born with ADHD or Autism, neither can be acquired later in life. Regarding people with developmental disabilities as merely mentally ill is a huge part of the problem. We literally function differently by design, it's not a fault of ours whatsoever. We need support. Not seclusion.
I have and was born with both of these disorders. I do have mental illnesses as a consequence of living with these disorders, to be fair, this is extremely common in AuDHD-ers. Comorbid mental illnesses are extremely common precisely because of how we are misinterpreted and mistreated by others as a consequence of that communicative disconnect. Anxiety, depression, all forms of PTSD, psychosis, schizoid disorders, sometimes literal personality disorders can develop as a response to such pervasive and chronic interpersonal mistreatment. We're conditioned to accept less than the bare minimum from everyone around us despite having much higher support needs than neurotypical people do. Without diagnosis, even often with diagnosis, we're held to expectations we cannot meet. We're set up to fail. Even when all we want, when all we need, is help.
Something has to change. How many more people just like Nicholas are there out there, being abused by the exact people trusted to care for them? Even one is too many.
Why are his family not looking after him?
What happened to our Israel Palestine coverage?!
Mental health services should have never been allowed anywhere near Autism.
Nick himself has just linked me this video and it really isn't easy to see those pics, I have always been aware of him having issues the whole time I've known him and I knew a little bit about the abuse going on but never to the extent of it being this bad. It turns out that where he is, is just down the road from me too so we are chatting about finally being able to meet up after all this time of him moving about all over. its going to be amazing to finally see him again, even if he is mute now but we can work around that I'm sure!!
I really loved him and wish him the best and recovery as soon as possible.
This is a messed up system and even more so given the CPS won't progress the case. I hope there are complaints against all the staff involved. The housing situation is not surprising and is likely for worse with various difficulties and mental health problems.
I was made homeless after reporting my landlord for lack of maintenance. I was put in a hostel with people with various addictions. Worse they didn't change the bed sheets from the previous tenant and the door had been smashed open.
The system is riddled with incompetence, abuse and disregard for people who are often pushed around like farm animals for slaughter.
Is he legally being held there or is his family able to care for him if they so choose?
i have a friend who was put in a private "specialist care" unit by their family because they were told by a psychologist that they would never be able to live independently and that they would get better care there than at home. The Family were paying thousands for this, and yet my friend was verbally and physically abused there. Lock naked in a room with no furniture for hours as a punishment for having autistic meltdowns, gaslight by the psychologists there who lied to them about the things they'd experienced never having happened. And Their letters to their family were read and any that mentioned the abuse were never sent. They are now living by themselves, taking care of their own pets, and working a part time job. All that progress has been done purely off their own back educating themselves about what autism is and how to manage it and through support from other autistic people. They were only in such a bad state that their family considered putting them in that institution in the first place because the advice the family were given on how to deal with my friends' autism at home was entirely wrong and made their behaviour increasingly erratic. Many of the most "severe" cases of autism are only soo debilitating and hard to manage because of the terrible way the people are treated by, or on the advice of, medical professionals. It's truly a national disgrace that will be looked back on in horror by future generations
And yet i have a friend who is on an antipsychotic medication that is causing them such severe physical side effects that it's made her disabled and was prescribed for a condition that her doctors all now agree she doesn't have. But trying to come off it causes her mental state to become soo erratic that she fears for what she will do to herself. She has begged her psychologist to have her committed to an institution so she can go through the withdrawal in a safe environment with professionals on hand to stop her doing anything bad to herself, but apparently that's only possible if she's already proven herself to be a serious danger to herself or others, by which time it might be too late. So she's stuck on this drug that is doing nothing good for her but ruining her body, and there's no way she can get off it. The system locks up people for years for having autism despite the fact that almost any other solution would make their lives immeasurably better, and yet they won't help people in situations where being temporarily institutionalised could actually be lifesaving. Its utterly mad and infuriating
His brother & mom are disappointing too.
Why don't they live with him?
Scandal. Also NTs seem to consider themselves all superior to autistic folk, yet all these idiots kept moving him into placements that are chaotic and noisy, when it's surely common knowledge to medical professionals that aspies need peace and quiet, to avoid overstimulation and being overwhelmed? Moving from one rubbish place to another that's unsuitable, yet expecting a different result each time?? What did they expect? Words fail me (and yes I'm a fellow aspie also let down by NHS, albeit not so badly, hence I'm so angry)
this is what heppens when people who dont drink dont take drugs and are in the community a good socialist and look the part ! are left to their devices they put all their problems onto people who dont look the part ! people who can have fault found with them like drugs etcetera. when really the faults could be half has mutch their due to the so called good heroes abusing their presumed good social and box ticking nature ? no 1s normal we are all different and the same its a matter of timing and your difference to the times that 1 is in its a Game really is and it makes us all worse any 1 genuine that is or any1 who are themself without applying the current trending personality traits to the act they are performing for god k,no,w s why !
I am an autist myself and it is horrible how society treats us. Inclusion has become a big topic, but only as long as people can throw the word around to show how open and social they are. But when it matters inclusion is totally thrown off the table. I feel for you. Best wishes.
Does his family want assistance to care for him at home? Put up a donation link please. I don't see one. Nicholas, if you see this, I'm so sorry you're going through this trauma. It's shameful it's been allowed to happen to you. I will pray for you 🙏
This is a DISGRACE. YOU CAN'T PUT A SQUARE THROUGH A ROUND CIRCLE! YOU NEED TO GO TO HIS WORLD AND NOT EXPECT HIM TO FIT INTO YOURS. HELP 🆘 NICHOLAS WITH PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL AND ISOLATION. EXACTLY HOW IS THIS MAN TO THRIVE IN THESE PREVIOUS ENVIRONMENTS. GET IN TOUCH WITH SOLICITORS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS FOR NICHOLAS. THIS IS A SIN TO GOD. LOVE ❤️ FROM A MUM WITH AN AUTISTIC CHILD.
PS-SUSSEX COUNCIL WE HAVE HEARD YOUR WORDS 💬 SO LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS. PLEASE LET US ALL KNOW. #helpnicholas. I'm sorry to hear this. IT'S A CRIMINAL OFFENCE TO TREAT ANOTHER BEING LIKE SUCH V
Why is he still there? Follow the money.
What a shame, they don't even have an appropriate placement for him. Disgusting abuse, let him go home to his family. How did it help get him back into the community when he's been locked away for ten year's? Shame on you Essex, let him go home to his family.
I hope the awareness of this topic reaches the people who can change the system!! Thank you for your courage in sharing your story.
Mencap are absolutly shocking to put me off workin in care because i couldnt treat humans like that.
These Oogletes/ghoulags are not what they appear to be.
Afflicted by witchcraft.
Tormented into silence.
Dystopian. Inhuman treatment.
Such a nasty cold world
Is the Secretary of State now aware of this?
it awful how little is taught about autism and how we keep on being bullied in schools due stereotypes that many still believe this has to stop we are people and the government needs to do more to solve this issue
Why wont the family look after him?
This has been my biggest fear for my brother.
Right now the staff shortages are pathetic and families get no help.
My brother is on the severe side and 20 years old.
We live in Colorado Springs. Cant get a day program for him nor respite.
The system is faiing all of us so badly.
You shouldn't judge someone until you get to know them.🌈🏳️🌈
this is why i would rather die resisting than end up in one of those demonic places
and people still dont believe me when i say autistic people stand no chance in living a happy social life. we actively get treated like subhumans. unless were autists with money like elon musk. then its okay. like wtf
We need quiet more nature based housing. Specifically for Autustuc/ND people.
Me and my husband are both on the spectrum, it is beyond painful to see a human being treated like this. Our brains are wired slightly differently, we see the world in a unique way and just need extra support. He should be released to his family and legal action taken against those who have failed him so badly, your not alone.
Why his brother or sister wouldn't live with him? family should take care of him. This is sad
The reason why us Autistic guys are still unsafe in this world and why we can never have nice things is cause the neurodiversity community has been co-opted by feminists.
A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith proves nothing.
Is autistic not has autism
Ireland isn't much better
