I don't claim to be any mountaineer, just someone who's read a lot about it. The porter was a long way up the mountain, basically in the death zone, in a really bad spot for rescue. It was a dodgy, dangerous proposition. If 8 -10 strong, healthy climbers could get organised for a rescue, he maybe had a 30 per cent chance of survival.
great analysis of the mountaineering illness
@1:40 😂😂😂😂😂 this guy's humor… I'm thinking it and your spin it best way. Dave Chappelle style.. mortal kombat..ppl r so dumb x climbing mountains
Off the point but Dr Grande you're hilarious! Making great points while also deadpan 😂😂😂. Nothing funny about these circumstances though. Thank you for what you do.
These losers should try to conquer their egos, which are much larger than Everest.
Hard to say but I don't think I would have been of any use stopping and checking in on the climber.
Climbing K2 is MEANINGLESS!!
It's extreme conditions everyone involved in climbing that mountain knew about that and what it could possibly mean. You physically is unable to save a person at such altitudes and terrain. It takes at least 4 people to evacuate a person from the mountain slope, and these people must have the gear and skill to do that. At higher altitudes, also oxygen. Hence, "regular" perception of what's right or wrong is not within the context of the situation. It's simply irrelevant and biased to imply immorality on anyone's behalf.
$20 a day? For this kind of work? We tip pizza delivery drivers. If they are rich enough to spend tens of thousands of dollars to go on this trip, why can't they pay or just tip the porters more than $20?
Why should they care about some crappy porter? A Muslim porter to make it worse
Rescues on K2 are extremely difficult. Claims that Western climbers would have been rescued are ill-founded. Many Westerners have been left up there. My advice to anyone like that porter would be just don't do it. It's not worth the risk.
What is wrong with people. Not a savaged mountain, savaged people.
it’s easy to critique and criticise people’s actions from the warmth and comfort at ground level but put yourself in those climbers situation, up one of the most dangerous and technical mountains, those climbers were not rescuers, their mindset was to summit, not rescue, changing a mindset, would’ve been dangerous for the climbers, as mental aptitude is vital in completing any extreme exercise, there are no guarantees in life, climbing mountains puts everyone in harms way but celebrating after the guy died is cold and the comment about, if it were a western climber, would people of helped? is valid, unfortunate to say but it’s a reality.
I'm sorry but the porter seemed like an absolute moron for attempting that climb without gear.
Considering the fact that it costs tens of thousands of dollars to climb the mountain and many people can only hope to go once in a lifetime, yeah, makes sense. People are not kind.
Are you kidding me ? I did this one backwards wearing only my slippers.
As a kid I had a wish climb Mt. Everest and now I finally have the financial means to do it and I am in enough good shape physically to do it. But after seeing what goes on on these climbs (especially climbers stepping over people in distress) I have zero wish to go. I think I will just use the money to go on a cruise or something and drink the expensive coctails.
I agree with who said it had it been that Norwegian woman or a Westerner that man would not have died.
I cannot accept that no one could do nothing and if nothing that they left him there and held his hand or comforted him would have been better than stepping over him like trash! I just couldn't do it !
The inhuman conditions of K2 requires inhumane people to climb it.
The self righteous commentators deliberately forget that these adventure seekers were utterly outside our familiar human parameters, not the main point to be made, but the specialists have already in effect told us, rescue attempts of the incapacitated in the death zone will fail, AND rescuers would die during the fools' errand attempts.
Good reasons for no one ever entering the dead zone.
But to the main point, that hypocrisy is worst of all, would any of us have chosen differently, "better than" the sherpas chose?
And please, never take a vacation. Dont even spend resources to build something beautiful. Instead, seek out and find a poor family, or many such, and transfer all your above subsistence surplus to them. Even sell your little cap cod house, because a two room apartment, plus kitchen and bath, really is enough for a family with children. Russians and other soviets by the hundteds of millions did this and produced interesting peoples. Either that, or shut up.
