There are numerous articles and movies breaking down the abysmal labor practices, horrifying environmental toll, and general mountain of waste produced by the quick vogue trade. Activists and even simply massive swaths of most people have been elevating the alarm about this for effectively over a decade, but it surely hasnāt stopped the rise of among the worst offenders within the trade. For instance, the ultra-fast vogue model Shein has skyrocketed in worth over the previous 5 years largely on account of their advertising and marketing success on TikTok. Plenty of us know that quick vogue is dangerous, however the one method corporations like Shein nonetheless thrive is that if we persuade ourselves in any other case and hit āadd to cartā anyway. So why will we do it?
The reply is that e-commerce has fully warped our view of what objects ought to value and the way lengthy they need to final (this contains and extends to our obsession with Amazon and two-day delivery). Weāre transferring by means of tendencies at an unprecedented tempo and itās doomed to worsen if we donāt regulate our purchasing habits and study to decelerate. Shoppers are being manipulated, however we are able to do higher.

Hey! If you like to hate on planned obsolescence and being manipulated by corporations, a video I produced last year on āwhy everything you buy is worse nowā is up for a Webby! You can find it on our channel and vote for it here until April 18: https://vote.webbyawards.com/PublicVoting#/2024/video/general-video/fashion-beauty-lifestyle
… Or you can thread below how much you hate me for the shameless self-promotion. Thatās fine too!

My only frustration here is that when I do decide to splurge and pay good money for an item, I will go to more expensive brands only to find out that their clothing is just as cheaply made as the rest of the fast-fashion products I'm trying to avoid. Spending more money on expensive items doesn't necessarily ensure quality!
Before you tell me to switch my gas stove lawn mover or vehicle go pick on Fast Fashion destroying the Earth š global emissions for production and travel š¦
I think that establishing required transparency from companies will be a great push away from fast fashion. Imagine if every business had to announce their unethical practices with no sugarcoating in ads, stores, and packaging.
If youāre not doing shein hauls or buying clothes every 3 months then fortunately, this video is not for you. People who buy excessive amounts of clothes can afford to choose to shop ethically and wisely.
But where will remote African villages get their George Michael and New York Marathon 1984 tshirts?
2:58 for another sense of scale, thatās around a single style for every 30 seconds on average.
0:31 Sales is not profit. They had $30B in revenue not profit
HOW do people buy that much each year?? I might buy four items a year, this is absolutely nuts.
I don't get it. Do people throw their clothes out? I always either wear them completely out and then my mom makes them into rags or donate them to a younger brother or thrift store.
I still wear a pair of jeans I bought in 1988 when I turned 18! Great thing about jeans is the more battered the better haha
And… I just saw an ad for Temu after watching this video.
I impulse-wishlisted 40 items but I'm glad I did not buy any of them
simply not buying unless you absolutely, absolutely need it is the solution here
āItās not possible for someone to be an ethical billionaireā – thatās a statement just thrown out there as if itās a fact š
Question: do you know the difference between sales (revenue) and profit? Quite a disappointing start to the video.
The irony that I had to watch a Shein ad before watching this video
68 clothes a year? Are Americans really that concerned with clothing/fashion? The only new clothes I had last year was two shirts that my aunt and SIL gifted me for Xmas and briefs because I forgot them while packing for a trip. I also use Tiktok but never once did it convinced me to buy a product. If I like something I saw there, I'll check the reviews before even thinking of buying.
Three interlocking gears don't move
Wokeism now wants to go after clothes to make our life more expensive
I'd have prefer the video to be 20 min long at least
Too bad all of Sabine Hossenfelder's fashion critcs aren't watching this. I have T-shirts older than her.
You think just because a brand-name item costs more that they paid the worker more money? Big fashion and electronics names exploit the same cheap Chinese labour. They are just mad because China is cutting into their profits. Is it bad that ppl are not being paid or paid very little? Indeed it is, but let's not act like these big corporations actually care about the faceless workers.
Make a regular T-shirt 15 dollars again and young people can turn away from fast fashion. My favorite leggings went from 35 dollars to 70 dollars after the last few years….what to they realistically want from people making 12 dollars an hour?
Women are so easy to manipulate, that's the takeaway from the video and it's not wrong.
This reminded me that I need to buy more underwear and socks. (And that I should throw out the socks that have holes in them.)
And of course I got a Shein ad right after this videoā¦
Small correction: Shein is making 30B in SALES, not profit.
Has the penny finally dropped with the gullible zoomers (and maybe the millennials) then?
my problem with this video:
– the holier than thou attitudeĀ
– suggest some non fast fashion, ethical brands that are worth the money if you want to post a video like this? all you're doing is fear-mongering and providing zero solutions.
– pricier items DO NOT mean they are made better.
– I don't think we are buying with the intent of throwing out at all
– I think we all want to have the comfort and luxury of AFFORDING things as a billionaire. we are struggling
– she didn't even post haulers. those were just people showing style advice…
Ultra trendy dressing is uncool
More than half the clothes i have is hand me downs šš
