Real insight I got from working on FIFA 17-19: Every casual must be turned into a paying customer. And we are all numbers, either in an HR ledger, or inside a computer. Employees and customers alike. Left EA in 2018, started working for Ubisoft.
KPI's and LGTV are two of the reasons why I later on left Ubisoft. The leadership was too focused on "performance" and "diversity" (in both games and the company), that the company literally starting creating more and more crap. Everyone was focusing on quota, to be bothered on actually doing their job, which was to deliver good fun products.
Logic holds imo, person with good enough push can easily introduce garbage ideas that are not easy to get rid off. Who's to say when blizzard (if ever) realized they efed up? 5 years is not that long of a time for some big companies.
How is zack struggling to get that a turning point doesn't need to be the literal first instance
as a streamer he's very familiar with how a certain turning point can be predated by others trying something but it not working on a big enough scale to actually change an industry until a later circumstance, which can be influenced by even the "origins" lol
Now i see why they are hating on Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3.
The real reason why is gamers have become cattle to scoop up battle passes and skins.
The priority has changed from making good games to good platforms to sell pixels out of.
Fuck the game as long as it sells pixels it's a success
I wanted a refund for Diablo for it being so bad but due to its design, i feel scammed because of these refund policys. They make the game so long theres no way you'd be able to refund. Espeacially if you pre-order ultimate edition like i did. Then a month later make the game consistanty worse. This means at any point a company can ruin their game and theres naff all you can do. Were told its the endgame, but you shouldnt have to get to the endgame to enjoy the game. As if anyone does this, they throw away their rights to refund the game. I was a hardcore fan since its inception. But that changed with diablo 4.
This is a old school media POV vid. Basically they know that most humans what everything to be black and white because we look for patterns in everything and don't like when things are "Unknown" or "Mysterious" even if we kind of get the gist why. Like Blizzard continuing to do this shit for money and becoming a bureaucratic system that divides its employees so they don't really know things about the project they are working on as a whole. So this Reporter Man is giving people an easy answer. "HEY THIS GUY STARTED IT! BURN HIS HOUSE DOWN! RUIN HIS CAREER! SACRAFICE HIS CHILDREN!!!". I could see the outlook of he sure companies were making snowballs before the essay and this guy got there. But he was the one that pushed it from the top of the mountain and the executives kept adding snow to it as it rolled and pushed it harder when it plateaued.
every game this guy touched i no longer play because bullshittery
5 years ago, he left the company, and everyone in his GRU team moved up, into other positions. Everyone he trained. But without the same inate belief that "fun is what the developers and players agree is fun". I'm not going to blame him personally, but it seems a bastardization of his work has taken over in his place.
Can you say glows in the dark?
Getting addicted to something is not fun.
This guy get's it right but wrong. The problem is the mix of phycology into game design for the wrong reasons, things like "how do we keep players playing more and coming back" …. rather then "what do players find fun and why" etc. It wasn't about this one game phyc guy, it's about what this game phyc guy was taught by, there is an entire generation of software related phyc graduates who came through uni thinking they can use phyc to make people do whatever they want in whatever product they are making be a game or social media.
The fallacy you are holding onto regarding MK2 and D&D is called "Post hoc ergo propter hoc"
False about Rift, i actually REALLY enjoyed it until they went F2P and ruined PvP and nerfec my build into the dirt.
Also very wrong about DnD
39:00 This is exactly why I quit classic WOTLK. After leveing to max, maxing out my professions, joining a decent guild. Nax just always stressed me out. I didn't know if something random might happen like having my wifi data drop or the game just outright crashing. I quit right before Ulduar and never looked back. I've found more meaningful friends playing Elden Ring instead.
Why does DayZ still do so well now? It doesn't cost much on sale; it's hard AF when you first start out…
It's the ownership, once you finally get built up, and cool gear and rides..
Now not so much targeted at the games sells, but do you know how many server providers and modded servers there are for that game. And for the most part, THAT is $15 ish a month for a low pop. Who owns THOSE server providers? "Item Mall"..
Hard games create "ownership" once you break your neck to get good.. And if you don't, your a meat shield for someone to kill that pays.. along with all the other little small break downs in the pyramid of business. Its a ramble and just my thoughts
I love how everyone pretends that warframe didn't set the standard for these types of games
Bro it’s profit milking. Why all these hand wringing? We know what the problem is, the free market is letting us down. Simple as that. Either you regulate away these shameless cash grabby features or you stop buying their shit. And since gamers can’t organize an effect boycott and are mostly reactionary then this is the slop you’re gonna get. Late capitalism
"Let's take a step back, all the way back, to the year 2001…"
"THEY HIT THE FUCKING PENTAGON LYLE"
Good times.
I lost my hardcore character on my horse it started rubber-banding back and forth back and forth then the mobs knock me off my horse and killed
Lol watch the video!? RNG all changed in 2001, it's now longer real
I think the guy makes a compelling case for why this particular researcher and his data and methodology gave Blizzard and other companies the tools and ideas which led to current trends in monetising games. Would they have gotten there on their own, eventually? Sure. Did the companies then put a singularly cynical and exploitative twist on data that could have been used to just, you know, make good games? Absolutely. But it seems foolish to deny that in our timeline, Blizzard wouldn't be where they are now without this science and data driven approach to fleecing customers.
Misss that golden age of gaming, BF3 expansion were the gold standard for me back then.
I will say I'd be much happier if I hadn't burned $10k+ on gaming as an adult.
Feel like D3 had a better zoom distance than D4
Just because this was used before doesn't mean the guy wasn't one of the first people to bring it to the videogame industry and commonly used.
Turning point and point of origin are not the same thing.
To make it simple. Wow was not the first mmo but it was a turning point for mmos.
Its weird because like… I knew about Diablo Immortal before it was even announced. I think quite a lot of people did. The game had like 100k pre-registrations on the google play store before they even announced it live. It was labeled as 'Coming soon'
Getting the small insight into Amongold's life as an efficiency expert was an "Aha" moment for me. I have used similar techniques of efficiency at past jobs and revolutionized the amount of work that was accomplished. It is good to find someone thinking along the same lines.
Did you know you could walk outside and count the leaves on the trees, or think of an alphabet and try to find something that starts with it? There are so many things to do, but why… why play this game??? I don't understand.
I will tell you how to make a "fun" game. First, you have to be way more intelligent than your audiance, then make an illusion for them to indefinitely chase like a carrot. Muhuhahahahaa
Asmon doesn't understand genesis and proliferation aren't the same thing. Baldur's Gate has been around for decades it has only VERY RECENTLY gone mainstream.
37:45 this is so true. been there and done that. yes it does have to be when you come right down to it people have no power in real life now days is why this is the normal. the moment you think you have power is the moment your homeless but one would wonder what is the difference. when you put it in context.
This one is really down the rabbit hole. This guy did great research but I think the conclusion is a stretch. It's like the Hitler game on Wikipedia, you can get to WW2/Hitler in a few connected pages from any start.
The ol' "news hook" where you say one thing and follow-up with another. It disconnects the audience from the premise they joined to see. Using bait-and-switch to make a video/story more interesting is likely this guy's forte.
20:25 I don't actually believe him. I feel he is trying to connect with an audience that is disproportionately violent, particularly against others and not inanimate objects. That somebody like this is trusted to translate "wHaT thE pLayEr wANtS" rather than finding some average that would draw "average" people into gaming is backwards. I also am not surprised, but definitely disappointed that some in the audience laughed, like they're still 7. I'm an uncle of 6 boys, and this phase didn't last longer than maybe a month for any of them, where hurting others because you're mad is lauded and gratified. Go face the real world, because it forces you to grow up.
Efficiency farming of us.
It token system alone really destroyed Destiny 2 for me. Because to me tokens=bad arcade for me. So the game smelled like garbage everytime I saw a token. That and the weapons feel worse to me in Destiny 2 for some reason. I will never be a Destiny 2 player again and is waiting for Destiny 3…..
BEJEWELED IN WOW
14:45 really? hahaha if I had a buffet of things, i'd eat the exact thing I like and don't give a shit about the rest.
Dick on Anvil? Yes, I play Tarkov.
Asmongold most have the 24 pack of the white t shirts
KPI's are not bad per se, but if you choose the wrong KPI you can fuck up really hard. Basically if you believe that spending time in a game will get you immersed into it better then your KPI will be "Time spend in game" and you tell your devs to raise that number. But instead of adding content that will make it fun for you to spend more time in the game, they simply decrease the drop chance for the loot so you have to spend more time to get to a certain point in the game. That is how you can abuse the data that you have.
It is basically like the "Dieselgate" scandal. They had to meet the KPI CO2 emissions, but instead of developing technology to reduce CO2 in the exhaust gasses they simply developed a software that told the car to reduce engine power while being tested for those emissions.
The game companies all seem to be using this "quick'n dirty" method of reaching their goal instead of fixing the problem for everyone by adding content.
If it wasnt this dude, wouldve been someone else. These days its up to the individual to watch themselces to not fall in all the "Pay to play" traps out there. If you pay to win, you've ultimately lost, and that's a choice youre allowed to make. I'm happy with myself ive cut all media like this out of my finances. No pay to play, no subscriptions. I'll look down and pity those choosing to allow themselves to roll around in the mud.
It's not blizzard it's activision
I've always been a gamer that played games for the story and to have fun. Im playing a story that I've immersed myself into. Once the story is over I'm waiting or hoping there will be a sequel to see where the characters end up.
Whats with all these videos telling people how they should have fun?
If i want to mindlessly grind my face off and i find that fun, wtf is the issue there then?
All these diablo hate videos and the one thing im getting from every single one of them is people telling other people how they should have fun and how that fun is not diablo 4 right now.
Its just kinda weird
