Why?
Constant unneeded stress due to incompetent certain third parties.
Many people would love to become qualified therapists, but how?
Looked into it, and the same question arises, cash. Money. No help nor advice.
Tories
Some cases can be resolved by following a certain diet. That is why a joined up system is required – dietician, blood screening tests plus general doctoring, and psychotherapy.
Erm..covid?
What is behind our mental health pandemic? Answer is Social Media.
Nootropics. The answer is there, but where is it? It might be a jungle out there, but there is also a jungle inside each and every one of us.
Such a depressing topic, and yet such an uplifting interview.
Alienation is the common denominator. And the root cause is of course not one thing but must lie within the governing principles of an economic system (neoliberal capitalism) which is essentially dehumanising, divisive and exploitative and is designed by and for the already powerful.
Neoliberalism is the root cause of mental health issues, in all the forms it takes, and the deleterious impact on people's lives. Inequality is central to its pernicious ideology because its purpose is to transfer wealth from the majority to the rich- Britain is the most unequal country in Europe, except Bulgaria. By design, not accident. Mental health issues are far more prevalent in societies that are unequal. Labour does not even mention redistribution of wealth- it has no reason to as it is committed to delivering the same failed Tory/ neoliberal policies that have caused the damage. Oliver James has written about the effects of inequality on societies.
Brilliant episode!
You can lay the blame for this pandemic of depression at David Cameron and George Osborne's feet. This is the inevitable end result of austerity.
A lot of it can be put down to unfulfilled ambition. Certainly in my case . Life is just too expensive for the basics – unless you have rich parents !!!! It's just depressing.
its a shame schools dont have mental health provision, its no less important than dental checks.
It's basically the modern version of capitalism that causes nearly all of this, and until people actually understand that, understand that people don't want to just see themselves as assets to be valued or discarded at market rate, nothing will ever change.
The years of stop and start pandemic shut downs have crushed a lot of young peoples hopes of a rewarding career – I feel for them
25:25 I don't think that this is what you should tell people who are suicidal. It only adds to their pain.
The thing that really got me through that one bleak dark time in my life was being told something along the lines of 'the pain you are feeling now is real, it is only temporary, it is your body telling you that you're alive & whilst things aren't great now, they will & are going to get better.'
Excellent
😇
As an outreach worker working with young people with EBD, CAMHs never once answered the phone! When we did get referrals they were worse than useless, keeping children with ADHD waiting! Signing off children with anxiety issues for missing appointments, reading notes during appointments, useless!
Mental health has always been the poor relation within the NHS but has been much worse since 2010. It is probably one of the most neglected areas of health care, especially for young people. It is an utter disgrace. I’m 68 and have had several episodes of depression throughout my life. If we intervene early enough we can make things better for young people. But we have a government that simply don’t care. Everything they say is from the teeth forward. The NHS is in deep crisis, that has been made far worse by Tory underfunding.
Thank you for highlighting this important issue!
I am a counselling student, I work for a charity for free and they do not charge for sessions. If you are struggling to find somebody to talk to due to waiting lists or cost please investigate local charities that provide free support. I work for a wonderful charity called Bearded fishermen funding is always an issue but please search around or even opt for long distance telephone counselling or peer to peer services, hope this helps
It is not really clear whether the problem is a shortage of therapists, or that therapy is ineffective. If there is some kind of therapy other than antidepressant drugs or anti-anxiety drugs that is really effective, but not readily available, then probably colleges and universities need more courses to train therapists. Of course they could not all be employed by the national health service, but what is to stop people paying out-of-pocket for the therapy (or taking out installment plans to pay for it). There must also be a question as to whether being mentally disabled from participation in the workforce pays better than being unemployed, or employed in lower level jobs.
It is not so long ago that the royal family was urging people who had mental health problems to utilize the mental health services. Perhaps their appeal was too effective and left mental health services swamped.
I am listening to this on the day Jeremy Hunt is waving the austerity stick once again at those unemployed – especially those on long-term sick. Personally I have experienced anxiety and depression all of my life; my first memory is of feeling anxious in my cot. Suicide ideation has been a constant, close friend that has made me feel more in control of my life since I was 12.
I was recently diagnosed with a form of autism, and this was helpful as it did explain a lot of the problems I have had. However, I believe that I would still have poor mental health irrespective of being neurodivergent and consider it a comorbidity. I am now 35 and looking back, a large portion of my life has been lost in a void of anhedonia.
In order to be fast-tracked for help – or to even be taken seriously – you have to do 'something' drastic, to move from being passively suicidal to aggressively suicidal. A person should not have to reach that point. Counselling on the NHS is also very ineffective for many, as it is 6 weeks of therapy. The education system remains very rigid and there is also a lack of SEN teachers. There is a huge backlog of children waiting for an assessment for autism or ADHD and their learning and mental health is suffering as a consequence.
There are many factors involved (including poor diets, the effects of austerity, and an exam-based education system that's almost purpose-designed to create stress), but one of these is massive over-diagnosis – both formal and self-diagnosis – in which many normal emotional reactions are medicalised and diagnosed as a mental disorder, and also in which self-diagnosis and self-attachment to a mental ill-health label has become fashionable – a means of attracting attention, sympathy and creating an identity.
Waiting lists are 9+ months for psychiatry appointments under private health insurance too. Crazy.
